Training Jan 4-Jan 9,2009

It's going to be a great year! and already off to a great start! Today, we had Jesse Taylor come in to train and the guy is an animal on the mat! He has been training Jiu Jitsu with us as a supplement to his MMA training with Team Quest, off and on for the last two years and his Jiu Jitsu skills keep increasing. Along with his conditioning, it's non stop action. Lots of fun! He has a fight coming up soon and I can't wait to see him kick some butt!

I have 10 major tournaments spread throughtout the year, on my calandar that I'm going to compete in. These tournaments are no joke. In the last week, I've put together a training plan for myself to get myself ready. When training time increases you have to know that the potential for injury goes up so, a priority for me is to train smart. I'll be competing at a bodyweight of 162lbs! so, a little bit of dieting is in order.

I have talked to so many people with intentions of attaining their goals but they have no plan. No plan = No follow through. What is your plan for 2009? What must you do and how are you going to attain your goals? If you'd like some input, bring me your goals sheet and I can tell you what I think (and I will keep it just between us)!

This week we're going to focus on leg attacks along with guard passing. I know I get a lot of students getting anxious to learn more top game because everyone's bottom game has improved so much! It's going to be a BLAST!!!

Great post Michio! Those are some great goals for the year. I know as a team we are all behind you to support you to help you achieve these goals.

I really liked what you posted about goals in regards to no plan means no goals. Planning is so important. One of my goals for 2009 is to come back to class once a week and increase my BJJ. My plan for this is to be at class Thursday nights and to train at least once more outside of class specific to BJJ. I know I have been out of action for almost 2 years now, but not any more.

I started of the year right by getting into class last Friday. What a great class we had. Andy kicked my butt in class and it was a great learning experience. As I pondered what I did wrong in class and pondered how bad I got my butt kick, I thought about moving forward and learning from my mistakes and getting better. While I was doing this, I thought of a quote that I heard a while back about failure. The quote went, failure is not falling down, or losing; failure is refusing to get back up. I thought this was very powerful because although I got my butt kicked in class, I did not fail because as long as I keep on learning and moving forward, I will be successful in the long run.

Team- I hope we all improve this year and take our game to the next level1 Happy training for 2009!

Thank you Eric!

I appreciate the kind words. I've been mentioning a little every class about creating a plan to achieve your goals and hopefully, even if I can help just one student excel at achieving his/her goal at a quicker pace...that would make my year!

sounds like you're on the right track! and I like the quote about "failure is not falling down, or losing; failure is refusing to get back up"

I'll see you in class!

I totally agree tonight was one of the funniest nights at bjj. I want to thank Michio for making the pan ams MANDATORY for me, because if he didn't, I would probably not compete in them. the only other thing that i wish is that Michio make other MANDATORY tournaments this year, or else, to be quite honest, i may never accomplish my new years resolution for 2009, which is to compete AT LEAST 3 times during the year.
I'd also like to add that the instruction given to the class tonight was extremely useful for me, and answered a lot of my questions I had about passing the guard, and I’m definitely going to add the techniques we learned throughout this week to my game plan for the up coming tournaments. So thank you so much for dropping some knowledge on the class, and for improving my game literally overnight!

Thursday night was a great class night. It was great seeing the team and rolling with everyone. Also, it was a very humbling night for me. I realized that I have a lot to work on in my game. Everyone has gotten so good. Connor, wow you game is awesome. Eric Black, you too! Everyone has made giant leaps in their game. This is great because by training with so many good team members, I will only get better.

Thanks everyone!!

thank you Ryan for the kind words! I'm glad that you are getting a lot out of class.

Eric, they say you're only as good as your training partner...you make the guys better too!

Team,
I wanted to share with everyone a video that has a great message in it. The video is a commercial made by Nike of whom I feel is one of the greatest athletes of all time- Michael Jordan. Here is the link to the video:

Pretty powerful stuff!!

This week helped me more than any other week with guard passing. Drilling the same position (Over/under guard pass) for an entire week, it's done a lot for training.

I was only able to make it 3 times this week, but it was great to feel like I picked up where I left off due to drilling the same position.

Michio, what day in February is the tournament in San Diego?

thank you Eric for sharing the video! also, that's why I love Jiu Jitsu so much...it's very humbling!

I should receive more info soon about the tourney and I'll pass it along! Andrew, I liked what you said at class today, about how you've committed to 3 days a week but if you can't make one of your scheduled days you'll come another day to make up. I'm glad that you're enjoying the training! todays' class, Sunday, was a lot of fun! Lot's of talented students!

Michio,
Thanks for the personal coaching last week on attacking the anchors. I used it last night during mat time and it is the beginning of a new paradigm for me in the game. Thanks Russ
