December 21-23, 2008

Hi guys!

check out the Chris Haueter audio interview from Dec 19. Lots of wisdom, insight, and advice. It's about 20 min long. I listened to it three times already not counting the original interview and lots of light bulbs lit up for me. Chris has been doing Jiu-Jitsu 20+ years and has been around the block, so to speak. I encourage you to take the time and listen to it. It'll help you grow.

Speaking of growing...I tell my student that I hope that they're doing Jiu-Jitsu to improve. What this means is that in training, you're always looking to expand and add new things so you're never "One dimensional." So, in training, when you are trying new techniques and ideas you make yourself vulnerable and what this means, you're probably going to "Tap" because you're going to make mistakes but that's ok because the point of training is to improve. You Improve by learning. So, when you "Tap", you ask yourself "what happened? then you look for corrections, you learn and you improve your game.

I am so fortunate to have Chris as my instructor. His coaching is invaluable. I have had tremendous jumps in my game and I certainly will pass this along to my students. What makes him such a good coach? Like he says in his interview, PASSION! ENOUGH SAID.

Another man that I would like to mention is Russ Whitaker. I have never met a man with as much honesty and integrity that he puts forth. Russ is such a busy guy and so involved that my only gripe is that I wish I could coach him more often in Jiu-Jitsu. I feel that he would be a Champion! Everyone loves Russ and we are so Happy that he is part of our team! This guy is a Stud!

It's going to be a short week in training this week. Only Sun, Mon, and Tues. Today, we started details of concepts & principles of the closed guard. The attack we're going for this week is the Omo Plata (shoulder lock with the legs.) Not only a great technique but a great position because it gives the attacker an angle as well as creating scrambles. That is when you catch a good grappler is off scrambles and if you're well versed in those situations, you'll have the advantage.

Kenny Jewel helped me with the audio interview with Chris this last Fri. He is a great guy and I want to say thanks! He has his own web site, Grappletv.com. Please check it out when you get the time. the site has interviews, techniques, products, and so much more.

Hey Guys, I know that it's Christmas season but tournament season is right around the corner. So, don't slack off in your training. I am heading up to train with Chris again this Fri and will take a handful of students with me. Let me know if you're interested in going. Do as much as you can to improve! The more you put into it, the more you'll get out of it. That's the truth! Merry X-Mas!

Dec 14-19 training

First, congratulations to Eric Black on his Blue Belt promotion on Monday, the 15th! He's been training a little over two years and is an absolute beast on the mat! He has diligently put more effort into bringing up his bottom game of guard control and side mount escapes that along with his top game, puts him in the official category of "Jiu-Jitsu Beast!"

This week, again, we're putting more emphasize on guard control and attack. Sunday, we started with controlling and attacking with an overhook from the closed guard. Monday, we spent time on attacking with bent arm locks from the bottom and we'll continue throughout the rest of the week on elaborating those positions.

We put up more chokes (no-gi), on our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique section. So, check it out when you get the time!

I still have some injuries that I'm working through, so I have to modify a lot of my strength training and cut back a lot on my mat time which bums me out! but hey, I STILL LOVE IT! I'm planning on heading up to train with Chris Haueter again this Fri and I'm looking forward, as usual to training with him!
Next week will be a short week for training...only having classes on Sun, Mon, and Tues. Have a Merry Christmas everyone!

training Dec 7-12

Training was GREAT this week! We did a lot of guard control and defending the guard pass. We have guys on the team that are making huge jumps in their game! The stand outs this week, in my mind were Ben Blakesly, Andy Atkinson, and Andrew Lowen! These guys really show heart, work ethic, and dedication!

I went up to train with Chris this morning and I got a lot of one on one with him. The guy is great! I also got to train with Rob Casey. this guy is tough! I had a great time .

Dec 1-Dec 5, 08

Had a great Thanksgiving...ate too much and took a few days off of Jiu-Jitsu training. For myself, I got a lot of heavy strength training in. working through some injuries but still got it done! I want to congratulate Ryan Grandon for his promotion on Dec 1 to the Purple Belt! He's been training for over 5 years and he's a stud on the mat! Good guy for sure.

This year has gone by fast but we still have one more month to make some big gains in our Jiu-Jitsu game! This week, we're going to push the drills, focusing on guard control, Top and Bottom. We also started a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques section on our web site so check it out when you get a chance. We're going to put up some new techniques once every 7-10 days so check back often. These will be techniques that we use at the Team Magnitude Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
